The Semantic Web Lab (SWlab) at the University of Zakho has made significant contributions to the field of Kurdish Natural Language Processing (KNLP) with the recent publication of a comprehensive survey paper in the Jurnal Informatika.
Authored by Dastan Maulud, Karwan Jacksi, and Ismail Ali, the paper, titled “Towards a Complete Kurdish NLP Pipeline: Challenges and Opportunities,” critically examines the current state of KNLP research and identifies key challenges and opportunities for future development.
The rapid growth of Kurdish language content on the internet necessitates the development of robust NLP tools and techniques to enable machines to effectively process and understand Kurdish text. While some progress has been made in KNLP, the current state of the art still falls short of supporting the full range of NLP tasks required for advanced applications such as semantic web development and text mining.
This survey paper provides a comprehensive overview of existing KNLP research, including its applications and the unique linguistic challenges faced in developing effective NLP systems for the Kurdish language. By identifying these challenges and exploring potential solutions, the researchers aim to pave the way for the development of a complete and robust KNLP pipeline.
This research is a valuable contribution to the growing field of Kurdish language technologies and highlights the ongoing efforts of the SWlab at the University of Zakho in advancing the state-of-the-art in NLP for the Kurdish language.
