A Significant Achievement in Advancing Kurdish NLP and Ontology Research

On October 31, 2024, Mr. Media Sabah Ezzat, a researcher at the College of Science, University of Zakho, successfully defended her doctoral thesis titled “A Hybrid Approach to Ontology Construction for the Badini Kurdish Language.” The thesis, supervised by Dr. Karwan Jacksi and Dr. Ismail Ali, is part of the larger project led by the Semantic Web Lab at the University of Zakho, focusing on advancing semantic web technologies and Kurdish natural language processing (KNLP).

The research presented by Mr. Media Sabah Ezzat addresses a critical gap in semantic web ontology development for the Badini dialect of the Kurdish language, a low-resource language. The study introduced a methodology for constructing and utilizing a semantic web ontology using the UOZBDN annotated corpus and an HMM-based POS tagger, achieving remarkable precision and accuracy rates. This achievement is a testament to the Semantic Web Lab’s ongoing commitment to pioneering research and technology development in the fields of multilingual NLP and semantic web applications.

I extend my sincere gratitude to the esteemed discussion committee for their constructive feedback, insightful suggestions, and maintaining a professional and supportive discussion environment.

Congratulations to Mrs. Media Sabah Ezzat and her family on this outstanding achievement, marking another milestone for the Semantic Web Lab.
